AND GYPSY PROJECT
with children and young people, living in Traveller and Gypsy communities, Olympic area, East London
2004 – ongoing
Between 2004 – 2005 ON SITES ARTS ran a series of photography
workshops on one English Gypsy and two Irish Traveller sites within
the Lower Lea Valley / 2012 Olympic area, East London. Twenty-five
children aged between 3 – 13 were taught basic camera skills.
They then photographed themselves, their families and homes, and
the landscapes around their sites. Each child received a photograph
album containing the complete set of photos they had taken.
The official Traveller site in Hackney was built 12 years ago and
many of the Irish families have been living there since the early
1990’s. The official site in Newham is the home of four generations
of an English Gypsy family which has been living on the site for
the past 34 years. It lies next to the Stratford Channel Tunnel
Rail Link building works. The families living on the unauthorised
caravan site in Tower Hamlets have to move around the area as they
have no legal site on which to live.
This 2004 – 2007 project took place with the support of the
London Gypsy and Traveller Unit.
